Isolation and characterisation of the glycopeptides of the structural glycoprotein of corneal stroma

Abstract

Abstract Glycopeptides were isolated from the pronase-digested Structural Glycoprotein (SGP) of calf corneal stroma. Two major types of glycopeptides could be identified : type I containing Gal, Glc, Man and GlcNa and linked through glucosamine to aspartic acid ; type II corresponding to hydroxylysyl-glucosido galactoside. The distribution of total hexoses of the SGP in these two glycopeptides is in the ratio 9 to 1 in favor of type I in contrast to the total unfractionated stroma where it is 1 to 4. Type I glycopeptide is considerably enriched in the SGP-fraction of the stroma. It is considered as the specific carbohydrate portion of the Structural Glycoprotein.
