Hf impurity and vacancy interaction in α-Zr

Abstract

Abstract The interaction between Hf impurities and vacancies in α-Zr metal containing 1 at.% Hf has been investigated by time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) measurements on the 482 keV level of 181Ta probe nuclei in the sample. All 181 Ta nuclei were found to experience a mean quadrupole frequency 〈 ν Q〉 = 310 ± 5 MHz with a Lorentzian distribution of fractional width δ = 0.002 and an asymmetry parameter η = 0.04, characteristic of substitutional sites in the α-Zr matrix. Measurements carried out at room temperature on the sample quenched from 1123 K did not reveal the presence of any defect related quadrupole frequency. These observations show that Hf impurity atoms occupy substitutional sites and they do not bind vacancies in α-Zr.
