Abstract

Abstract Predictions of the induced radioactivity in representative structural materials (aluminum and stainless steel) have been made for spacecraft in low Earth orbit (LEO) with emphasis on determining the importance of different space radiation sources, secondary particle contributions, and the spatial dependence expected within spacecraft. Orbit parameters corresponding to those of the recently recovered long duration exposure facility (LDEF) satellite are used, which are also very similar to the orbit parameters planned for Space Station Freedom.
