Abstract

Abstract Computer attacks are on the increase. Computer viruses and worms have recently been publicized, with much hype and little substance, in both professional and academic literature. This paper is about microcomputer-based viruses and mainframe computer worms that attacked a single university's various computing facilities in recent months (September 1987 to January 1989). The paper discusses the working details (mechanics) of these attacks, the general characteristics of such programs, and how they can be detected and serious damage prevented.
