Abstract

ABSTRACT New investigations into the Chabestan cemetery cremations, formely attributed to the Late Bronze Age 3b, have enabled them to be dated to the beginning of the period (LB 1 and 2a). The Champ-Crose cremations testify to the introduction of Urnfield burial rites in the western Alps. These rites did not however totally replace inhumation, which continued to be carried out by cultures with strong regional characteristics. The origin of these cremations in the Alps region should be sought to the south of the Alps rather than to the north.
