Abstract

Presents an overview of Library and Information Science (LIS) education in the United States. Oyler argues that most LIS programs do not offer area studies courses because they do not attract sufficient student enrollment. Oyler recommends several solutions to remedy this, such as educating students about the possibility of a career as an area librarian or offering area studies courses via distance education to attract greater enrollment.
