Abstract

ABSTRACT- The Relatos del Viejo Antonio (1998) by Subcomandante Marcos are based on an antagonism between the Indians and the non-indians. This antagonism is at odds with the EZLN stance in favour of a pluri-ethnic society. At the same time, the language used in the tales is more in conformity with this pluri-ethnic position. This tension in the zapatist discourse can be interpreted as a conflict between utopia and reality, in the sense that the discrimination of the indigenous population is conducive to a rhetorics of idealisation while the future construction of society requires a more hybrid discourse.
