Abstract

Abstract We present data on the rounding of the resistive transition for granular Al and the corresponding electronic density of states (EDS) as determined from tunneling measurements. We find that the EDS of the granular Al in the fluctuation regime is depressed from the normal state value over a small energy range E c( T) centered about the Fermi level. From the values of E c( T), we are able to estimate the decay rate Γ( T)/ h of fluctuations in the Cooper pair density. The values of Γ( T) determined from tunneling measurements agree with the theoretical prediction only over a limited temperature range.
