Abstract

Abstract In contrast to other branches of materials science, membrane science in its present state is far from offering the possibility to predict the functioning of a membrane when the structure is known or vice versa. However, by reviewing the developments in the theory of linear and non-linear permeation and selectivity of mono- and multi-layer membranes, it can be shown that some progress has been made in understanding relations between function and structure. The next step in this development may be theoretical and experimental research into the effect of mozaic structures of a membrane on its functioning, but a complete understanding of membrane behaviour still appears far away.
