Characterization of Zeolite Catalysts by Mas NMR

The application of solid state NMR techniques to the study of zeolite catalysts has contributed, greatly to our understanding of zeolite structures. The background to the experimental techniques needed to obtain high resolution 29Si and 27Al spectra will be described including the advantage of using very high magnetic field strengths, increasing the Si content while maintaining the structure, and resolving the signals due to the five possible local silicon environments. (change-para-here) Several important extensions of the NMR experiments based on a detailed investigation of the effect of dealumination reactions on the 29Si and 27Al spectra of a series of zeolites will be discussed. The mechanism of residual broadening of the 29Si NMR spectra of zeolites, interpretation of spectra with more than one independent crystallographic site; the observation of structural changes induced by sorbed organic molecules, and the effect of structural defects will be discussed.
