Abstract

Abstract The location of the M2 giant resonance in 28Si, 90Zr and 208Pb, predicted within the framework of the MSI-RPA particle- hole model, has been confirmed by high-resolution inelastic electron scattering ( E X ≈ 44A − 1 3 MeV ). The fragmented M2 strength distribution can only be described assuming a mass-dependent quenching of the intrinsic g s factor. This has the consequence that the long sought M1 strength is much reduced in heavy nuclei, an effect which is supported experimentally.
