Abstract

Abstract Surface defects, steps and topography are directly seen to influence domain structure on reconstructed surfaces of Au{100}. Bright field and dark field images in the low energy electron microscope were obtained between 14 and 17 eV. Nucleation and growth are observed during the first order reversible surface phase transformation between reconstructed and unreconstructed structures at 1050 K.
