Abstract

Abstract A novel series of rare-earth (RE) intermetallics RE 2Pd 2Pb, crystallizing with the tetragonal Mo 2FeB 2-type structure, was studied by means of magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements. The phases with RE = Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er and Tm were found to order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures ( T N's in the range 3.6–35 K), while for Pr 2Pd 2Pb Curie–Weiss paramagnetism was observed down to 1.72 K. The compounds Y 2Pd 2Pb and La 2Pd 2Pb are weak Pauli paramagnets. All the ternaries studied exhibit metallic character of the electrical conductivity. For the Ce-based plumbide a weak Kondo effect may be inferred from the resistivity data.
