Abstract

Abstract Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) (128-37-0) is an antioxidant and used as preservative in foods, animal feed, animal and vegetable oils, petroleum products, rubber, and plastics. Ingestion is the most common route of its exposure. It is metabolized by microsomal enzymes to reactive acid metabolites, which can bind to cellular macromolecules, such as proteins and DNA, and cause reproductive toxicity and cancer. BHT was approved and classified as Generally Recognized as Safe by the US Food and Drug Administration.
