Abstract

Abstract The application of a new spectral technique to the analysis of some surface profiles is described. Where a physical model of the effect of surface features on performance is available, it is possible to define the parameters to be measured and the bandwidth of measurement in such a way that performance can be quantitatively predicted. For the three examples given — friction and wear coefficients, grinding wheel sharpness, and peening damage — it was found necessary to confine the measurements to surface extrema to obtain good predictions. It is suggested that this method could profitably be used in many other cases.
