Abstract

Abstract The effect of the dimethanesulphonoxy-alkane series, CH 3·SO 2·O·(CH 2) n·O· SO 2·CH 3, on the number of haemopoietic colony forming units (CFU)/femur, in a pure line of rat, has been investigated. The potency, with respect to CFU depression, is maximal when n = 4, and n = 1 is more potent than would be expected from the results of the remainder of the series. The effect of the chemicals on CFU/ femur is compared to the effect on the nucleated cell count (NCC)/femur, and an analogy drawn between the ratio CPU depression to NCC depression and results of b erenbaum on the optimum time, with respect to the antigen, to administer the chemicals to produce immunodepression. A theory involving the linkage of two cellular entities by the dimethanesulphonoxy-alkanes is discussed in an attempt to explain the mode of action of this chemical series.
