THE USE OF THE INTERNET BY STUDENTS AND LECTURERS OF UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN

Abstract

The study examined the use of the internet by students and lecturers of University of Ibadan. The study aimed at determining the awareness of internet facilities, the purpose of use, relevance of use, frequency of use and constraint to the use of the internet among students and staff of University of Ibadan. The respondents consist of students and staff of faculty of technology and faculty of science. The descriptive survey method consisting of two sets of questionnaire and interview were used to select random sampling of 100 final year students from both faculties while 40 lectures were selected from both faculties. Out of 100 questionnaires distributed for students, 80 were returned and this gives a total of 80%, while 20 which were 50% were returned out of 40 questionnaires distributed for lecturers. The data were analyzed using frequency counts, tables and percentages. The result showed that there is high level of awareness of the internet among students (80%) and lecturers (76.48%) of University of Ibadan. On frequency of use, 76% of students use it frequently and 76.47% of lecturers use it frequently. On purpose of use by students, Email (30.05%), project (20.69%), browsing (19.21%), course work (19.8%) while purpose of use by lecturers, research work (80%), email (90%), browsing ( 80%), internet news(27.7%). On relevance of the internet, 80% of the students agreed it was very relevant while 77.8% of lecturers agreed it was relevant. Also, the study revealed poor access to the internet (93 or 53.1%) and power supply failure (58 or 33.1%) as major constraint to the use of the internet. Finally, the study recommended adequate supply of electricity to the university community. KEYWORDS: The Internet, Students, Lecturers, Usage, University of Ibadan.
