Abstract

Holoblastic and enteroblastic forms of development in conidial fungi appear to intergrade in species producing annellides. Analysis of this intergradation shows that it stems from an over-emphasis on conidial ontogeny and from inadequate definitions of the terms holoblastic and enteroblastic. In addition to conidial ontogeny it is shown that conidial delimitation, conidial secession and proliferation of the conidiogenous cell are among other significant stages of development. The terms holoblastic and enteroblastic are redefined and it is concluded that conidial ontogeny in all annellides and many phialides is best described as holoblastic.
