Abstract

Abstract The variation of different physico-chemical properties of pyridine-water mixtures with solvent composition shows an extremum which always occurs at the same pyridine concentration. Detailed analysis reveals that this is because of a subtle interplay of hydrophilic-hydrophobic properties. It is shown that a solute having a hydrophilic-hydrophobic structural dichotomy presents exactly the same behaviour.
