Abstract

Abstract This paper describes an investigation into the automatic correction of errors in the rectilinear alignment of machine tools by means of an optical error-detecting system. Under the control of this system a machine tool carriage travels as closely as possible within a true plane irrespective of inherent alignment errors of the machine tool, and this accuracy of the machine can be maintained throughout its life. The problem was first examined theoretically, and then verified experimentally by simulation. The experimental results confirmed the feasibility of the proposed system, and provided essential information on the design of such a system for machine tools.
