Abstract

Abstract In this paper we calculate explicitly the light cross section for scattering by a surface acoustic phonon propagating in a metal-dielectric bilayer in contact with a prism. In this configuration (Kretschmann) there is a three-wave mixing of volume electromagnetic waves, surface plasmon polaritons and surface acoustic waves, giving rise to enhanced Brillouin scattering. The electromagnetic field for backward and forward scattering is calculated by solving the Maxwell equations to first order in the corrugation amplitude induced by the surface phonons. Calculations are presented that show the effect of the dielectric film on the cross section.
