Abstract

The basal ganglia are subcortical nuclei that are components of cortical–subcortical reentrant circuits involving the cerebral cortex and thalamus. This chapter describes the anatomic composition of these circuits, and models of their involvement in motor control and other behavioral functions, followed by a description of disorders resulting from their dysfunction.
