Abstract

Abstract A drawback of As(III) detection using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) is that it is susceptible to interferences from various metals or organic compounds, especially in real sample water. This study attempts to understand the interference of co-existing of Fe(III) and humic acid (HA) molecules to the electrochemical detection of As(III) using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical experiments include stripping of As(III) in the solutions containing HA with different concentrations, cyclic voltammetry in 0.5M H2SO4 in the presence of HA or Fe(III) with/without addition of Fe(III) or HA, and stripping of As(III) in the presence of HA or Fe(III) with/without addition of Fe(III) or HA. FTIR and XPS are employed to confirm the affinity of HA to Fe(III) or As(III) in acidic condition.
