Abstract

Abstract The analysis of drug addiction typically ignores the broader general involvement of economicand social change in encouraging abuse and addiction. The present paper considers the effects of rapid change or economic growth in the growth of dependency. Growth is implicated both (a) directly, through the need for increased production and consumption of legal drug substances, and (b) indirectly through changes in meaning structures caused by too rapid change and technological innovation.
