Abstract

Abstract A periodically kinked and stepped surface can be characterized by two integers for each step and two more integers to translate one step to its neighbor. In terms of these four integers, we write a simple formula for the Miller indices for fcc surfaces vicinal to {100} and to {111} planes. These useful formulas are extensions of the work of Van Hove and Somorjai [Surf. Sci. 92 (1980) 489].
