Abstract

Abstract Intensity/wavelength plots of the continua emitted by solid metal oxide particles in flames have been used to determine the temperatures of such particles. Under conditions where the concentrations of free radicals are above equilibrium, these temperatures exceed the ambient flame temperature. The hypothesis that these temperature ‘excesses’ arise from recombination of H and OH on the surface of the particles has been tested, and found to be in accord with the experimental results.
