Abstract

This chapter reviews long-term potentiation (LTP) of synaptic transmission, currently one of the most widely studied and popular candidate mechanisms for a cellular phenomenon underlying long-term storage of information in the nervous system. This chapter will briefly describe the overall phenomenon and basic attributes of LTP. This background is important to obtain because a basic understanding of LTP is prerequisite to understanding most of the rest of this volume.
