Abstract

Abstract The free energy of defect formation and the activation energy for motion of the most mobile defect have been determined from the ionic conductivity of as-grown and Mg-doped single crystals of lithium iodide. Values obtained are s f = 4.5k, h f = 1.06 eV with k m (cation vacancy)= 0.43 eV, giving a defect concentration at the melting point x 0(T m) = 0.18at.%, concordant with the other alkali halides.
