Abstract

Abstract The photoluminescence and the excitation spectra of Bi 3+ in the pyrochlore La 2Zr 2O 7 have been investigated in the temperature range of 15–300 K. At low temperatures, the photoluminescence spectrum of Bi 3+ in La 2Zr 2O 7 consists of two bands, one in the ultraviolet (385 nm) and the other in the visible (515 nm) part of the spectrum. Thermally activated intensity exchange between the two bands is observed. The ultraviolet emission is attributed to the 3P 0,1→ 1S 0 transition and the visible luminescence to an impurity trapped exciton-type emission. The low efficiency of Bi 3+ emission in La 2Zr 2O 7 and in Y 2O 3 (fluorite structure) is tentatively ascribed to bonding within the tetrahedral Bi 4O network that promotes photoionization of the luminescent center.
