Abstract

Abstract Non-uniform electric fields produce motion (dielectrophoresis) of cells and other neutral bodies suspended in liquid media. The general force expression for this new and useful technique is derived. The equation is a general one, capable of including frequency-dependent conduction or polarization mechanisms as well as provision for various desired geometric distributions of dielectrics. It forms the basis for studying interpretive models of the dielectrophoretic response of suspended bodies such as cells and organelles.
