Abstract

'The article asks for the reasons of the increasing interest in East Asian religions, in shamanistic practices and esotericism in Western cultures since the beginning of the nineteen-eighties. The author looks for the historical background of this development as well as for its socio-psychological functions. The main focus is on the motivations for these interests and how they develop in the realm of Christian cultures and build up a critical contrast to them. Another topic is the impact of spiritual movements on feminist and ecological discourses. Furthermore, the question is raised how these interests of supporters of the new religious movements are connected to the involvement of their parents in culpable historical processes, i.e. National Socialism in Germany.'
