Abstract

Abstract It is shown that the well-known two-dimensional Liouville and Toda theories can be regarded as Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten (WZNW) theories with conformally-invariant constraints, and that they simplify considerably when thus regarded. In particular, the WZNW-approach produces the general solutions in a simple manner, removes the unphysical singularities, and throws additional light on the W-algebras associated with these theories.
