Failure analysis of steam turbine moving blades

Abstract

The moving steam turbine blades have failed by fatigue. The fatigue crack had initiated at the leading edge in the fractured blade (RR 1031-2) and at the trailing edge in the cracked blade (RR 1031-2). The blade material conformed to the specification and no metallurgical abnormalities were found responsible for the crack initiation. Metrological inspection revealed that the radius at the leading and trailing edges, and the thickness of the blades at these edges were less than that of the specification. It is believed that high stress concentrations arising from these sharp edges were responsible for the premature fatigue crack initiation in the blades.
