Abstract

Editors’ Note The letters in this volume span some thirty years but there are gaps in the correspon- dence, most notably between 1877 and 1883 (although there is one letter dated to 1881 and one to 1882). Foster and Huxley presumably did correspond during this period but we have no knowledge of what happened to the letters. In addition, the letters dating to 1888 appear not to be in either archive; some of these are reproduced in whole or in part in Leonard Huxley’s two volume Life and letters of Thomas Henry Huxley and have been added to this volume. In transcribing the letters we have modernised spelling and punctuation, and cor- rected grammar. Words we have struggled to read or are unsure of have been put in square brackets. Illegible words are indicated as such. vii Michael Foster. Photography by G. Jerrard, 1881. (Wellcome Library, London.) Thomas Henry Huxley. Etching by L. Flameng after the Hon. J. Collier.
