Abstract

Sarnath is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists, since it commemorates the site Buddha's first sermon after achieving Enlightenment in the 6th century B.C. It lies on the east side of the Ganges River opposite the holiest city of Hinduism, Varanasi. The temple at Sarnath, as well as its frescoes that portray the life and qualities of Buddha, was created in the 1930s in an eclectic modern style.
