Abstract

The number of young people (less than 21 years old) is very high in the French region « Grande-Brière » until the end of the 19 th century. Schooling here rises slowly ; in 1891-1892, ten years after passing of the bill which compels families to send their children to school, one out of three gets out of it. 50 % of the young people go on working the land ; the others are rather attracted by the small rural industry than by the big industry of Saint-Nazaire.
