Abstract

Abstract Some general structural rules concerning the stability of stepped and kinked faces in relation with reconstructed flat faces are given. These rules have been mainly deduced from our experiments on stepped faces of fcc metals, using ultra-vacuum techniques and low energy electron diffraction. Other examples (on Si diamond structure for example) are presented and discussed.
