Abstract

Abstract The positivity of the structure factor implies that the pair distribution function can be represented as an infinite sum of characteristic functions of probability distributions. The structural diffusion model is an example of such a representation. The empirically determined parameters specifying the radial distribution function characterize it in terms of two partial structures, a large and a small scale structure of the medium.
