Abstract

24th August 1999. View of the Porton Room on the second floor of the Central Library, home to the Porton Collection of 3,500 items covering all aspects of Jewish religion and culture, in English, Hebrew and Yiddish. It was originally kept in Sheepscar Branch Library before moving to the Central Library in the 1960s. This photo was taken just after the closure of the Municipal Buildings for essential works to be carried out, during which time the Porton Collection was kept in storage while reduced Central Library services were provided in the Town Hall. The Porton Collection is now (2007) on the third floor while this room is part of Business and Patents.
