Abstract

Abstract Aromatic hydrocarbons from a series of petroleum-bearing sediments have been isolated and subjected to analysis by proton magnetic resonance (PMR) spectroscopy. The percentage of aromatic protons in the aromtic fraction (PAP) is observed to increase uniformly with increase in temperature (depth) of the samples. Evidence is presented to indicate that the PAP-value is proportional to the level of maturity of the petroleum.
