Abstract

Abstract Preoptic and anterior hypothalamic tissues of newborn mice were cultured in a Maximow double coverslip assembly. Neuron discharges were recorded extracellularly from 32 explants while medium temperature was changed between 30° and 42°C. Warm-sensitive response, an increased discharge frequency in response to a rise in temperature, was exhibited by 33 neurons and cold-sensitive response by 5 neurons. The temperature coefficients of these thermo-sensitive neurons were comparable to those reported in vivo.
