Sport and Exercise Psychology:Overview

Sport and exercise psychology is concerned with the psychological factors that influence sport performance and exercise behavior, and with the psychological effects of sport and exercise. With regard to the first aspect, the article focuses on individual determinants of sport and exercise, like personality traits and other dispositional variables, on social factors like group processes in teams and leadership behaviors of coaches, and on motivational influences on sport and exercise behavior, like achievement motivation and exercise adherence. The second part of the article deals with short- and long-term effects of sport and exercise, namely mood states and health-related effects, like improved self-esteem and cognitive functioning. The article closes with recommendations for future research and applications in various settings, like physical education or recreational sport.
