The image effects on a pile-up of screw dislocations near a circular interface

Abstract

Abstract In order to assess the image effects due to a second phase, a pile-up of screw dislocations situated at a distance from a circular interface is analyzed using the method of continuously distributed dislocations. The results show that the image effects become unimportant only after a distance determined by the relative shear moduli of the two phases and the size of the particle. The interaction of the second phase with the applied stress is more important than that with the pile-up. The results are extended to give a quantitative criterion for crack propagation.
