Abstract

Abstract The probability distributions of certain random variables chosen to estimate the deviation of the equilibrium orbit from its ideal position due to random magnet location errors in an alternating-gradient synchrotron are investigated. The distributions are determined in a unified form which lumps the details of orbit theory into two parameters. Initial steps are taken on the basis of orbit theory to express these parameters in terms of the matrices which correlate the random errors in magnet locations.
