Abstract

Abstract The density δ, of ice nuclei that should be formed along the path of an ionizing radiation traversing a volume of supercooled water as a result of its homogeneous nucleation has been calculated and its dependence on the energy of the radiation and the degree of supercooling has been shown. In view of the uncertainly of the value of the ice-water surface free energy, σ, four sets of values have been chosen for the purpose of calculation and corresponding four sets of values of δ have been obtained. It has been shown that the construction of a radiation detector utilizing the principle of homogeneous nucleation in a supercooled liquid when irradiated to high energy particles should be possible. Furthermore it has been shown that an experimental determination of δ as a function of temperature will be useful to obtain correct values of σ, at different temperatures.
