When do transient double peaks occur in pH gradient electrophoresis?

Abstract

Abstract Several investigators have observed the occurrence of two transient peaks in isoelectric focusing and gradient electrophoresis experiments. Let v( x) be the dimensionless mobility in the presence of a gradient, and let x = x 0 > 0 be the isoelectric point of a molecule initially at x = 0. If x( t) is that molecule's position at time t, we show that a transient peak will arise whenever dv dx is an increasing function of x when x < x 0. Similarly, a second peak can arise when dv dx is a decreasing function of x for x > x 0.
