Abstract

Summary We have described a method of making lung extracts for surface tension measurement which is applicable to clinical material obtained by lung biopsy. Successful extraction of surfactant from specimens of lung is dependent on mechanical contact of the electrolyte solution and the alveolar surfaces. This can be accomplished efficiently after the alveoli have been reinflated with carbon dioxide. This additional step in the procedure for making surface active lung extracts has permitted us to apply this investigative tool and to realize comparable normal minimum surface tension measurements in a meaningful clinical setting.
