Abstract

Abstract Compression tests performed on any given carbon fibre-reinforced plastic material yield results which vary substantially between different test methods. A series of tests has been undertaken using different methods on a composite of Courtaulds XAS fibres in a matrix of Ciba-Geigy Fibredux 914C resin. The optimum test method was the RAE method. This gave good consistent results and finite element analysis shows that at failure there were negligible additional secondary stress systems in the specimen due to its configuration.
