Shock initiation of fast decomposition in crystalline solids

Abstract

Abstract A high speed photomicrographic study at framing rates of up to 2×10 6 sec −1 has been made of the initiation of fast decomposition in single crystals of β-lead azide by the impact of thin steel flyer plates, both in air and in vacuum; for plate velocity > 105 msec −1 the crystals exploded at the crystal-plate interface, whereas for velocities < 75 msec −1 there was no explosion. Preceding initiation of explosion, phenomena such as high speed cracks, crystal fragmentation and lateral ejection of fragments at speeds greater than the impact velocity were observed. The importance of these processes is discussed.
