Abstract

Abstract A quantum theory is presented of the heavy particle dynamics occurring in electron stimulated desorption. Emphasis is placed on formulating the theory of ion and neutral energy distributions in a framework which closely parallels that available in the description of gas phase molecular dissociation phenomena. Strong analogies with the quantum theory of Raman scattering processes are noted, and the quantum theory of electron stimulated desorption dynamics is shown to reduce to that of previous semiclassical and quantum descriptions in limiting cases.
